Understanding Anti-lock Braking System
What is ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) & how does it work?
As the name signifies, the anti-lock braking system is a safety system in cars and other automobiles that keep your car wheels from locking up and help drivers to maintain steering control. Anti-lock braking system (ABS) is a safety anti-skid braking system used on aircraft and land vehicles, such as cars, motorcycles, trucks, and buses.
Further understanding its function, If the sensors detect that a wheel is about to lock up and stop moving, the system will release the brake. The release is only for a moment. ABS then continuously and repeatedly applies optimum braking pressure to each wheel, meaning the system will brake just enough to not lock the wheels. When ABS is active you may feel a pulsation through the brake pedal as you’re pressing it. The anti-lock system helps the driver remain in control of the vehicle rather than bringing the car to a stop. ABS operates by preventing the wheels from locking up during braking, thereby maintaining tractive contact with the road surface. ABS prevents your car from sliding and crashing as well as maintaining traction.
Let’s read about its history: ABS was first introduced as an anti-skid system for aircraft use in the 1950s. And in the 1970s, Ford and Chrysler proved that it can also be used in cars.
Also, a few benefits:
• Greatly reduce the possibility of brake lock-up.
• Provide a better chance of steering.
• Highly adaptable to every surface.
• Greatly reduces the possibility of a vehicle skidding.
• On loose gravel or snow-covered surfaces ABS may significantly increase braking distance, while still improving steering control.
ABS WARNING LIGHT: If the warning light comes on while you are driving, it means the ABS is not working properly. But your traditional brakes will still work.
